Description
Welcome to Integrating Technology in Adult ESL! This free professional development series is a part of TESOL 2008's Electronic Village Online. In this 6 week session, we hope to have everyone:
- Assess technology resources and personal technnology skills
- Review research, strategies and best practices for adult ESL technology integration
- Review online lesson plans, activities and curricula that integrate language and technology learning
- Create a lesson plan or class project which integrates technology, try it out, and share what worked with the group.
Target Audience
The target audience for this group is teachers who are working with literacy level adult ESL students. These students often are enrolled in free federally and/or state funded classes. They may have limited formal education and little or no technology experiences.
Weekly Content
| Week 1: January 14 - January 20 |
Hello. This is a week of introductions and familiarization of Yahoo Groups as well as this web site. We'll be doing the following activities this week:
- Read about Netiquette and take a brief self-quiz.
- Join the Yahoo Group for Integrating Technology into Adult ESL and become familiar with the group and its features.
- Complete on online survey to identify your classroom technology resources.
- Identify your classroom technology integration skills by completing an online survey at http://www.adultedonline.org
| Week 2: January 21 - January 27 |
- Read and respond to “Technology and Adult Learning: Current Perspectives” by Susan Imel - [http://www.ericdigests.org/1999-2/current.htm" | http://www.ericdigests.org/1999-2/current.htm]
- View and respond to “Creating Family Histories,” a 3-part video developed to help teachers learn about iintegrating technology into the classroom. http://www.ncrtec.org/pd/cw/history/start.htm
- Get a username for OTAN (Outreach and Technical Assistance Network) - www.otan.us.
- Review and analyze example lesson plans which integrate language learning and technology to determine the language and technology skills that are requisites and those that are actually taught through the lesson.
- Begin your lesson activity project by thinking about the following components for technology integration:learner, teacher, content, and technology.
| Week 3: January 28 - February 3 |
- Use the OTAN website (www.otan.us) to find and review lesson plans, classroom activities, sites to use with ESL students, references and articles about teaching, and media.
- Post to Yahoo Groups an outline of your envisioned classroom activity. You may find it useful to modify one of the lesson plans/classroom activities that you've reviewed so far.
| Week 4: February 4 - February 10 |
- Review at least 2 lesson activity outlines to give constructive feedback to others. Depending on the number of students involved, you may be working in smaller groups to receive and give feedback. We may have scheduled chats to facilitate these discussions.
- Continue to refine your classroom activity based on feedback you are receiving. Work from your outline to a more fleshed out lesson plan. You may choose to use a lesson plan format similar to Susan Gaer's on page 9 of "Enhancing your Lesson with the Internet" - http://www.otan.dni.us/webfarm/emailproject/catesol2004/enhance.pdf.
- Explore Microsoft Office Templates - http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates - and think about how you might introduce and use them in your classroom.
| Week 5: February 11 - February 17 |
- Read and respond to Susan Gaer and Marian Thatcher’s article "Classroom Management When Using Technology" - http://www.otan.us/browse/index.cfm?fuseaction=view_ft&catid=24353&recno=2260.
- Pilot your lesson activity in your classroom. If this is not an option for you, an alternate activity is to view and respond to a technology lesson video and lesson plan by Susan Gaer on Making Business Cards.
- Read and discuss articles on project-based learning and review examples of how technology is naturally integrated into this learning model.
| Week 6: February 18 - February 24 |
- Review what's been learned, share what's worked in our classrooms, and think about next steps. We will schedule a chat as well and have an online discussion and a survey.
Moderators and Co-moderators
Ms. Guckert holds an MA in Foreign Language Education/ ESL from the University of Texas-Austin. She has served over 20 years in secondary/adult ESL education and community technology as a teacher, and technology program coordinator. She currently is the Technology Coordinator for The Education Institute at Texas State University-San Marcos.
Ms. Meredith holds an MA in Speech from Northwestern University. After a career as a technical writer and editor, she got her secondary teaching certificate and taught math, language arts, and ESL in grades 6–12 for five years. She has been teaching ESL in the Austin Community College Adult Education Department since 2004.
